Sapphire is a variety of mineral Corundum, alongside the other popular choice for engagement rings, rubies. Corundum crystals in their purest form are transparent, it is the traces of natural chemical elements that alter their hue. For example, blue sapphires, in the classic royal blue shade, get their distinct colour from the traces of iron and titanium, or green sapphires, which also have hints of iron and titanium but with the addition of copper. The amount of these chemical elements present in sapphires are what determine its colour, with just the smallest adjustment able to drastically change the outcome.
